Luxury designer fabrics cushions and throws collection

Charles and Patricia Lester have spent many years developing exciting and original techniques for adding colour, dimension and texture to the fabrics that they use. They hand paint all of the luxury textiles as an artist would paint the light and shadows in a painting to give three dimensional depth and lustre. This unique method of adding colour to cloth gives a quality and iridescence that cannot be achieved by the more conventional dying techniques.

Through their work Charles and Patricia have established an international reputation for their luxury fashion and textile work. Their clients range from royalty to icons of the film world, the world of opera and stage. Individual clients such as HRH Princess Michael of Kent, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbra Streisand, Helena Bonham Carter, Vanessa Redgrave are just a small example of their incredible customers. Stockists of the interior art collection in the past have included famous stores such as Fortnum & Mason in London, Bergdorf Goodman in New York and Wilkes Bashford in San Francisco. Their individual cloth collection have graced stores such as some branches of Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys and Bergdorf Goodman dedicated one of their famous Christmas windows to their creations in 2002. In Britain stores such as Harrods and Libertys in London also carried the collection. Unusually Libertys have twice devoted all their Regent Street windows to the Lester's textile art. The first time was when the International Silk Convention was held in the store and the second in celebration of the centenry of the death of the artist Lord Leighton. This was in conjunction with the exhibition at Leighton House Museum where the celebration involved a 'live' theatre throughout Leighton's house. The Lesters recreated the set for the famous painting 'Flaming June' and their textiles added a creative dimension throughout the house.

They have been the costume designers for opera productions for Opera Holland Park in London and their work has featured in films such as 'The Wings of the Dove', Great Expectations, Hamlet, Greenfingers, These Foolish Things, The Ten Commandments etc.

As our culture of shopping has changed so dramatically in the past few years the interior collection, in particular, is now available from their studios in Wales and also some pieces are in their 'on-line' shop. And on a pop culture note - their cushions have been used for the set in 'Celebrity Big Brother'.

All the fabrics that they use, are processed entirely 'in house' in their design studios in Abergavenny, Wales. Every piece starts as a length of cloth, which is individually painted, printed, devore printed and pleated by hand. Charles and Paticia have spent many years experimenting and perfecting this unique art form. The result is a rare example of total art and craftsmanship, in the William Morris tradition, that explores and develops exceptional quality of work right through from the plain white fabric to the finished piece whether it is a precious wedding dress or a luxury piece of textile are for interior design.

Natural fabrics

The fabrics that are used for the couture collection and the luxury interior designer collection are all made from natural fibres such as silk, cotton and linen. All designs are original, they are evolved from Patricia's original drawings and painstakingly modified to fit into the sizes of screens required for the hand screen printing process. All this work is done in their studios in the Old Workhouse in Abergavenny.

The interior collection for the luxury home.

Until recently they have focused their textile expertise on their couture collection, with occasional commissions for bespoke interior projects and luxury interior pieces for individual homes or stage sets.

They are now design and develop a comprehensive collection of unusual and exquisite interior art pieces out of their exotic textiles. It must be emphasised that these pieces are not made in volume, the company is very small and specialist. Their work is an alchemy of colour, texture and inspriration, therefore the collection can be as varied as the changing moods of the sky, as colourful, delicate, dramatic and exciting as their couture collection. Commissions for specific colour stories are readily accomplished using their wide range of skills. At present the luxury Interior Designer Collection consists of cushions, pillows, throws, wall hangings, tapestries, coverlets, table toppers, bedspreads etc. Their tapestry work is exceptional, in that it is a medium that has never before been explored; a combination of sculpture and textile art using hand painted and finely pleated silk, intricately stitched in swirls and ripples creating light and moving shadows that add a liquid dimension to the texture and colours.

The future

Having touched on the world of film a number of times, the Lesters plan a future where they are involved more with media production projects. With their wide and varied skills for the colouring and texturing of fabrics - they would like to do more work in the world of film and television, both costume making and textiles as well as fabrics for set designs. They can not only make very exotic textiles, but the same skills can be used to make fabrics that have the look of being seriously worn, weathered and antique fabrics and clothes.
